Romantic On The Atlantic My fiancé and I were hoping for a romantic getaway by the sea and we found it in a surprising place - New Jersey. Specifically, we discovered the coastal town of Spring Lake, a treasured secret of many East Coasters, located only an hour and a half from both New York City and Philadelphia. As soon as we settled into our third-floor room at The Sandpiper Inn and took in the incredible views of the crashing Atlantic, we knew this was the perfect spot for our rendezvous. The building dates from 1888 when it served as a summer house for the Spanish ambassador to the U.S., and many of its original splendors have been preserved by the innkeeper, Rosemary Richards, and the owner, Harvey Mell. Lovely antiques decorate the guest rooms, for example, and the wrap-around porch is still an ideal spot to settle into a wicker rocking chair and sip afternoon lemonade. But contemporary luxuries have been added, too - like our huge bathroom with its speckled glass shower and an indoor pool. Later we took a long stroll on the Spring Lake's famous boardwalk to get a feel for this town that was once considered The Irish Riviera. We happened upon a game of croquet on a finely manicured lawn, and we could hear the faint sounds of Irish music coming from a happy hour celebration. Further inland, we found the town's namesake, Spring Lake itself. St. Catherine's Cathedral, a replica of St. Peter's in Rome, loomed over the lake with its dramatic gold dome. As we headed back to The Sandpiper, we couldn't help but wonder: Could this really be New Jersey?
Jim and I enjoyed our
Valentine stay with you. Especially enjoyed getting to know you, Rosemary,
so much better. You do so much to make your guests feel at home and
comfortable. Your breakfast is delightful - chalk up one more good memory
of The Sandpiper in Spring Lake. Love, Thank you to everyone here! We're celebrating
our 6th wedding anniversary with a weekend get-a-way to the shore. We
had never been to The Sandpiper before and we have been impressed with
the ambiance and pleasantries offered here. Everyone is so relaxed and
friendly yet not "in your face". We could be anonymous or make new friends
easily. Privacy was respected which isn't always the case in a small
Inn or B&B. The porch is lovely and this room has much appreciated touches:
the double Jacuzzi, the refrigerator, the hair dryer and atmosphere.
We'll be back! - Fondly, It's 10:00 a.m. on this glorious sunny Saturday
morning - how I hate to leave this beautiful place! Sometimes you get
so caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life you forget to have
a good time. The Sandpiper Inn is a little piece of heaven! It has everything
you need to relax and unwind. I took a long, hot bath in the Jacuzzi
and spent a quiet night reading a book I've been meaning to read for
the past year. A bike ride around the lake, through the town and on
the boardwalk was the perfect peaceful escape. With the window open
at night, the salt air and the sound of the waves puts you to sleep.
Everyone makes you feel at home and welcome... We were planning a trip to Florida or the Caribbean
but couldn't get reservations. How lucky we were that our first visit
to the Sandpiper was incredible. We couldn't have asked for a better
getaway. The warmth and hospitality at the Sandpiper clearly out does
the warmth of the Caribbean sun. Great food=Piancones. Great bike ride=down
boardwalk and around the lake with the ducks. Thank you Harvey, Rosemary
and Linda. We came here for a relaxing mini-vacation. It
was all that and more. This room is as nice as we have stayed in anywhere.
The double Jacuzzi is the icing on the cake. You must try it, preferable
with champagne. And you must go in the pool. It was very warm and relaxing.
Harvey, Rosemary and Linda are delightful hosts and really see to your
every whim, just ask. I could not think of a better way to end 1996
and welcome in 1997. We would very much like to return here again, perhaps
to say good-bye to 1997 and welcome in 1998. The Sandpiper Inn reminds me of a little doll
house. Every room makes me feel like home. My husband and I came down
to get away from the stresses of everyday life and couldn't have felt
more relaxed. Harvey and Rosemary were wonderful hosts and we will definitely
come back. I felt like "Alice in Wonderland" for two whole days. Going
back to reality of everyday life will be tough after being here. The
best part is that we found a wonderful peace to come back to when everyday
life wears you down. This has been a rejuvenation. Thanks! Our first bed and breakfast!! What a wonderful
experience. The Sandpiper is a warm, cozy, friendly and yet elegant
place to stay - the decor is just charming! All of it reflects the wonderful
staff and owners! Thank you for bringing a little bit of Heaven to the
shore. The peace and grace at your Inn can not be found in many places.
If the word vacation could be described in its full meaning, it would
be "The Sandpiper Inn". Thank you for all you've done for us at our
stay here. Your staff was great. Rosemary, Linda and Harvey, too. We want to
give our thanks to you. We came to Spring Lake to relax and rest, and
found The Sandpiper the very best. In Spring Lake, The Sandpiper is
where it's at - See you next year. We thank you again for a lovely stay. Spring
Lake sure as hell beats Cape May! This was our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast
- Now that we know what it is all about, we would expect the others
to try to be equally as good as The Sandpiper - Good luck to the others!
The staff and warmth of The Sandpiper was an enjoyable and unforgettable
experience. We will carry the fondest memories of The Sandpiper. See
You Again. Rosemary, Harvey and Linda- Our Third Stay Our
Third Room One thing remains constant The welcome feeling, the sincere
hospitality Perhaps it is not a dying art. Thanks to all for the perfect
getaway. This was our third visit to the Sandpiper and
it just keeps on getting better each time. Everyone here makes you feel
"like family". The hospitality, accommodations and atmosphere are all
wonderful. We look forward to many more happy and relaxing times here.
Every time we come back we feel renewed. We
are captured by the beauty of Spring Lake, the ocean, the beach, The
Sandpiper and this room. (The Taj Mahal) Special thanks to Rosemary,
Harvey and the wonderful staff that make our vacations special and wonderful.
See you in August. Charming, cheerful, comfortable and cozy. The
view is breathtaking. We feel like we could live here - thanks to Rosemary
and Harvey and Linda everyone is so accommodating and friendly. Our
room and Spring Lake always renews our mind, body and soul. Our stay has been delightful! Our first experience
using a "B&B" in our travels. We could not have a more pleasing introduction.
The pleasant and friendly personality of "ALL", the clean room and bath,
the delicious breakfasts & Teas. The view from the porch plus the close
proximity of the beach all add to our pleasant experience. Hopefully,
we will be able to return in the future. The Sandpiper Inn, 'tis the place I want to
be. It has everything a "Bed and Breakfast" could have, and it sits
right there by the sea! Linda, with her wonderful wit, and the staff
who do their best to befit. Rosemary's smile and Harvey's cool style
are people whom one can never forget... Hope to see you again real soon.
We love The Sandpiper Inn. It is the best in
Spring Lake! So relaxing and friendly. We'll be back soon. We've come to the Sandpiper many times, and
honestly, it just seems to get better and better. Great time, great staff, great beach!
