While the feeling is cozy, the Sandpiper itself is one of Spring Lake's most
elegant historical buildings, rich in architectural detail. A gracious Victorian home, it was built
about 1888, one of two identical cottages. In 1900 it was the only structure in the old
1st Avenue business district to survive the great fire of Spring Lake. This fire
destroyed nearly 40 structures including the magnificent Monmouth House across the
street. At that time, the current Sandpiper was the summer residence for Manual De Azpiroz,
the Mexican ambassador to the United States. The cottage was converted to the Sandpiper
about 1940. In later years Albert Einstein was a regular at the Sandpiper.
Christine and Harold Cullison purchased the Sandpiper in 2005 and continue to operate it to this
day. Warm hospitality reflects
an admired tradition associated with Spring Lake.
The Inn has
fifteen large, air conditioned rooms, all with a private bath "in each room", a glass
enclosed heated pool (84° degrees year round), all located one hundred
yards from the boardwalk and beach.
Our
beautiful wrap around porch is on the 2nd level of the inn, which
gives our guests a wonderful view of the ocean, as well as a comfortable
place to sit and enjoy the day.
